Books of 2019

My new year’s resolution last year was to read more and my goal was to read at least one book a month, buuuut I was unsuccessful =(  Luckily though, some awesome autobiographies were released and I managed to get halfway through the year. I’m looking to join a book club to help keep me accountable this year. If anyone has any recommendations, please let me know! Here are three of my favorite books of 2019.

Shoe Dog – Phil Knight

The book goes into detail on how Phil Knight first began as a distributor for Onitsuka Tiger through his company Blue Ribbon Sport and how it evolved into what is now known as Nike. He talks about his production trips overseas, his mentors, how Bill Bowerman his former track coach and Nike co-founder created an innovative sole for track shoes using a waffle iron, why he chose the name Nike, how he decided on Carolyn Davidson’s “swoosh” as the logo and much more. Definitely an good read for the sports lover, sneaker head or entrepreneur.

This is Not a T-Shirt – Bobby Hundreds

Bobby, co-founder of streetwear brand The Hundreds, explains how he and his friend Ben started as law students who drop out to build their brand known as The Hundreds which now has a cult following and is a huge part of the streetwear culture. The success of the brand came from their focus on community and use of their website blog (pre-social media era). He mentions how he got shirts into his first brick and mortar simply by “faking it til’ you make it” and also talks about the highs and lows of owning a streetwear brand. Perfect book for the streetwear, urban fashion enthusiast.

Atomic Habits – James Clear

A great book explaining how the smallest of daily habits add up and make a huge difference overall. It includes case studies and research that support James Clear’s reasoning. The tiniest change, as long as it remains consistent, such as meditating for 10 mins daily can drastically improve results such as better mood, increased energy, and being more focused.  Good read to start off 2020 if you need motivation to maintain the new habits you set for 2020.
